I was so busy today that I almost forgot about Music Monday, but here’s the wonderful Galaxy Song from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life in honour of the whole CosmoQuest crew, who raised over $20000 during their amazing 32-hour fundraiser hangout-a-thon this weekend! There’s also the updated Galaxy DNA Song, which Eric Idle recorded last year for Brian Cox’ latest documentary series Wonders of Life.

The Australian singer and songwriter Meri Amber keeps interrupting my long-prepared Music Monday list, but I just can’t help sharing her wonderful songs. This time she has written a little song called My Heart Is Yours resembling the works of Messrs Simon and Garfunkel and even much earlier English folk tunes. She has also filmed a great video for it where she takes on the whole of Sydney playing chess!

Continuing the weather theme from last week, my choice for this Music Monday is Jeff Lynne’s 2012 version of the 1977 ELO classic Mr. Blue Sky – set to a wonderfully animated video! Let’s hope that this will really improve the weather, posting Stormy Weather last week wasn’t maybe such a good idea…

There must be literally thousands of interpretations of Harold Arlen’s and Ted Koehler’s Stormy Weather out there and even the great Ella Fitzgerald has recorded the song several times. For this week’s Music Monday, here’s a wonderful version from 1975 – Ella without an orchestra, just brilliantly accompanied by jazz guitarist Joe Pass, with whom she had made a couple of albums in the 1970s.

Today’s Music Monday choice is a followup to my first posting from three weeks ago: the amazing singer-songwriter Meri Amber from Australia has now made a wonderful video for her latest song Share My Time. It has reached the top of the charts of the music initiative website triple j unearthed this week, where she had originally debuted the song. There’s also an early unplugged version on Youtube from last year and she has performed the song live on two Google+ Hangouts recently, once even in a duet with her dad!

Later today, a group of three astronauts returns from the International Space Station, among them the amazing multi-talented Chris Hadfield, who has shared his experience in space through tweets and posts with photography, video and even music for the last six months. As a goodbye present, last night a wonderful music video of David Bowie’s Space Oddity was posted on Youtube with Chris Hadfield on vocals and guitar – and with video entirely shot on the space station! I actually had chosen something completely different for Music Monday, but I simply can’t resist posting this even if it’s already all over the web by now. Words fail me how completely and utterly amazing this is – it’s like real-life science fiction!

[Update 14.05.: The spacemen are safely back on earth! The NASA already has a great video summary from hatch closure to landing up on Youtube. News articles are all over the place, so I think I don’t need to write a seperate article. I may post something about the importance of Chris Hadfield’s phenomenal outreach work later or in the next days, though.]

It’s Music Monday again, and today I’m posting the video I actually wanted to begin the series with last October. It’s something I found via Google+ – the Ben Folds Five are back together again, there’s a new album and a fantastic music video with some fuzzy guest stars which had been gone even longer than the band itself. One of the most fun music videos I’ve seen in a long time, guaranteed to cheer you up!

To bring a little bit of variety into this website-blog-thingy, I’m going to break with one of my long-time principles not to embed video content: starting today, I’m going to post one music video every week for a new series called Music Monday. Being a little bit of a musician myself, I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and share some of my favourites. I’m not going to upload anything myself, but I’ve set some requirements: they have to be live performances or music videos, not only songs cobbled together with some photos – and of course they have to be playable here in Germany, which makes the search for good music especially difficult because the GEMA-Youtube fight still blocks lots of stuff. I’m mirroring the postings seperately on Google+ and Facebook with the videos directly embedded and a backlink to the blog posting.

The first entry for Music Monday was not on my long-prepared list, but actually came spontaneously. It’s From Me To You, a wonderful little song by the Australian singer and songwriter Meri Amber, whom I’ve recently encountered on Google+. She has a wonderful voice and her songs and videos, available on her Youtube Channel, are amazing, thoughtful, intelligent and funny. She’s also has a great new song called Some Of My Time on triple j unearthed which she is trying to get on radio – please go and vote for her!

Ganz ehrlich – als ich das gestrige Update mit der Beatles Anthology fürs DVDLog vorbereitet hatte, war die Meldung, daß sich Apple und Apple endlich geeinigt hatten und die Beatles jetzt bei iTunes zu haben sind, noch gar nicht bekannt. Das hatte wirklich nichts miteinander zu tun und war eigentlich eine Folge von den Rutles-Reviews, die ich letzten Monat gepostet hatte, denn eigentlich kümmere ich mich wirklich nicht um die ständigen Apple-Pressekonferenzen, die in der letzten Zeit immer häufiger stattfinden zu scheinen. Die Beatles Anthology hatte ich schon vor langer Zeit einmal rezensiert, aber die alte Kritik hatte wirklich eine Überarbeitung notwendig und da ich nächstes Jahr sowieso endlich die Reviews der Beatles-Filme komplett überarbeiten wollte, war die Idee als Lückenfüller ganz passend.

Es hat auch wieder Spaß gemacht, nach längerer Zeit mal wieder in die Dokumentation hineinzuschauen, aber gewundert hat mich doch der derzeitige Amazon-Preis – fast 70 Euro wollen die für das Boxset haben – ich kann mich noch dran erinnern, daß ich damals erheblich weniger bezahlt hatte. Auch die Anthology-Alben sind mit etwa 25 Euro pro Stück unglaublich teuer, überhaupt ist alles, wo Beatles drauf steht, im Moment ziemlich hoch im Kurs. Seit Jahren will ich schon die neue Help!-DVD kaufen, aber für Preise deutlich über 25 Dollar plus Shipping wird das nichts. Apple hat sich mit den Online-Preisen der Beatles-Alben auch nicht gerade mit Ruhm bekleckert: die Download-Versionen kosten teilweise mehr als die CDs und das Angebot ist äußerst beschränkt, denn es gibt nur die Stereo-Versionen der 13 offiziellen Alben und die Past Masters – keine Anthology, keine BBC-Liveaufnahmen, keine Let it Be Naked. Wie üblich bei Apple: viel Lärm um nichts :-).

Also, diese Woche Beatles, nächste Woche kommt was völlig anderes und übernächste Woche wird es voraussichlich im DVDLog den Klassiker geben, der mir schon seit einem halben Jahr eine ganze Menge Besucher beschert hat. Auch danach ist das Programm schon so gut wie im Kasten, und auch drüben im Foto-Archiv habe ich endlich mal wieder ein paar neue Bilder gepostet. Ist also einiges los im Moment :-).

Ich kann es ja nicht lassen, an einem besonderen Datum wie heute ein paar Updates auf meinen Webseiten zu machen. Eigentlich hatte überhaupt nichts vor, denn die nächste DVD-Kritik sollte frühestens Ende nächster Woche kommen, aber dann habe ich doch noch was gefunden. Neulich erst für’n Appel und’n Ei erwischt – die From the Earth to the Moon Signature Edition. Natürlich hatte ich die Serie drüben im DVDLog schon öfter im Programm, aber jetzt sind es endlich die entgültigen und finalen Reviews sowohl von der alten deutschen Box und der amerikanischen Neuauflage. Hat auch nur etwa fünf Jahre gedauert, aber wenn ich sowas mache, dann auch richtig gründlich! Es wird bestimmt nicht die letzte Review mit multiplen Inkarnationen sein :-).

Und noch was aus der Musikwelt: heute werden sämtliche Platten der Beatles als remasterte Versionen neu erscheinen. Das ist insofern kein Kunststück, als daß die in den achtziger Jahren erstmals erschienenen CDs wirklich keinen besonders guten Klang hatten und viel zu Wünschen übrig ließen – viele holten deshalb ihre geliebten Schallplatten wieder aus dem Schrank und die Bootleg-Szene sorgte für viel schöner klingende Versionen der Alben. Diesmal wird es die EMI sicher besser machen, aber der recht gesalzene Preis der CDs (€13,95 pro Album und €184 für das Boxset!) wird mich sicher davon abhalten, mir den ganzen Beatles-Katalog nochmal neu zu kaufen. Positiv ist an der Remastered-Aktion vor allen Dingen, daß die ersten vier Alben das erste Mal offiziell in Stereo auf CD erhältlich sind, aber die enthaltenen Mini-Dokumentationen im Quicktime-Format, die es in einem großen Boxset auch als DVD gibt, dürfte für ernsthafte Beatles-Kenner sicher nicht besonders interessant sein.

Wirklich gut gelungen sind allerdings die Trailer und Videos auf der Beatles.com-Seite, die man sich unbedingt anschauen sollte. Bleibt nur zu hoffen, daß die Tonmeister keine kreativen Neuabmischungen versucht haben und bei den Ursprüngen geblieben sind – die Remixes von der Yellow Submarine-Soundtrack waren ein interessantes Experiment, aber sämtliche Alben so aufgemotzt kann ich mir einfach nicht vorstellen.

Gerade erst kommt mir die Idee, daß ich ja heute als Thema ein paar Beatles-Reviews drüben im DVDLog hätte posten können. Aber zu spät! Der Aufwand wäre jetzt sowieso zu groß gewesen, aber in diesem Herbst werde ich ganz bestimmt nochmal eine Beatles-Reihe in Angriff nehmen, nachdem ich die Altlasten vom letzten Jahr endlich abgearbeitet habe. Jetzt mache ich aber erstmal ein bißchen Pause und melde mich irgendwann so Ende nächster Woche wieder – see ya! :-)
